Keep public land in public hands: deliver the community's vision for the Mullumbimby Hospital site

The Mullumbimby Hospital site has sat empty since 2016. Since the hospital was closed by the State Government, Byron Council has paid a $6 million remediation bill to decontaminate the asbestos left on the site.

Between 2017 and 2018, our community came together to co-design a vision for this land – Aboriginal, public, community and affordable housing that stays affordable in perpetuity.

Byron Shire has zero public housing, there are 114 people on the social housing waitlist in Mullumbimby alone. This flood-free, centrally-located site is one of our best opportunities to deliver the housing our community needs.

On 27 November 2025, Council resolved to ask the NSW Government to purchase the land to deliver on the community's vision for housing on this important site. To deliver the vision our community co-designed, we need to keep public land in public hands.

We call on the NSW Government to:

  • Keep the Mullumbimby Hospital site in public ownership
  • Purchase the land from Council and deliver the community's co-designed vision
  • Deliver the housing our community needs, honouring years of community consultation

Public land should deliver public good. This is our opportunity to revive public housing in Byron Shire.
